Kwaidan
This masterful rendering of four ghostly stories by Lafcadio Hearn, an American author who moved to Japan in the 19th century, remains one of the most luminous visions of the supernatural ever committed to film. Japanese director Masaki Kobayashi (Hara-kiri) mounted these tales of demons, spirits and dreadful curses in a widescreen, boldly colorful style; Kobayashi’s achievement was awarded a Special Jury Prize at the 1965 Cannes Film Festival as well as an Oscar® nomination. Originally seen in the U.S. in a drastically shortened version, this magnificent new 4K restoration of Kwaidan reflects the full, original three-hour cut of the film. Featuring a brilliant score by the great Toru Takemitsu (Ran, Woman in the Dunes), Kwaidan is the perfect Halloween date for grown-ups, described by Guillermo del Toro as “a fairy tale that is both incredibly scary and incredibly beautiful.” In Japanese with English subtitles. “Awesome and enthralling… a spell of surrealistic enchantment in breathtaking color.” – Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times
