Live organ accompaniment by John Lauter
It may be football season but don’t forget to show up to class! It’s Slapstick 101 at the Senate as we screen an all-American silent college football comedy, celebrating its 101st anniversary!
Silents at the Senate presents The Freshman with live accompaniment by organist John Lauter on the Mighty Wurlitzer theater pipe organ! This collegiate football tale is a zany sports farce about a not-so-big man on campus who thinks he’s perfected a sure-fire play towards popularity: joining the football team! But what this clueless co-ed doesn’t quite comprehend is that he’s as bad at breaking through social hierarchy into popularity as he is the defensive line and into the end zone.
Starring Harold Lloyd playing his everyman “Glasses” character, The Freshman was one of the most successful comedies of the silent era and remains a testament to the timelessness of physical comedy. Come see it as it was intended to be seen, with live organ accompaniment in a movie theater with a crowd of laughing people!
And, as always, following the silent film presentation patrons will have a chance to take a tour of the organ pipe chambers and the organist will be around to field any questions you may have about theater organ and the art of silent film accompaniment!
