Based on Erich Maria Remarque’s classic novel of the same name, this anti-war war picture is an unforgettable and moving story of the fervor of youth, cut down in the face of global madness, chopped into bits by the meat grinder that was trench warfare in the so called “Great War.”

Released during the fast and loose “pre-code” era of Hollywood before self-censorship took hold, its explicit imagery depicting the horrors of the first World War may surprise you. Modern movies shock with gore, blood and guts. But All Quiet on the Western Front nevertheless provides an indelible and honest picture of the appalling dehumanization of the lowly soldier, sent into the fray with callous disregard by an out of touch, decrepit aristocracy.

It is epic. It is grim. It is a must see classic, directed by Hollywood Golden Age luminary Lewis Milestone, lauded by critics, awarded by the Academy, and much reviled by Adolf Hitler. What better recommendation could there be?

In addition to being our inaugural Book Club Screening, this film is a part of our Centennial Encore series. All Quiet on the Western Front played at the Senate three times in late September of 1930, againg in late December of 1954, and on New Year’s Day 1955. We are proud to continue the tradition of the communal cinematic experience and revival film screenings at our 100-year-old neighborhood movie house.
