This holiday season join the Senate as we keep family precisely centered in the frame with a 25th anniversary screening of Wes Anderson's meticulously staged and riotously melancholy comedy/drama The Royal Tenenbaums.
Everyone knows that Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman) is an incorrigible lout, prodigious liar, deadbeat dad, and terrible husband. But what Royal (and this film) presupposes is that maybe he doesn’t have to be? His family, played by an impressive ensemble cast including Gwenyth Paltrow, Luke and Owen Wilson, Danny Glover, Ben Stiller and Anjelica Huston, is understandably skeptical. But as inevitable mortality casts its shadow, the bonds of shared experience and deadpan humor may be the only way back into the light for this dysfunctional family.
And so, once you’ve recovered from your Thanksgiving feasting, come to Detroit's oldest surviving neighborhood movie house for a modern classic from one of the 21st century's most important filmmakers. Our community of film lovers hope to see you there, taking solace together in the fact that our own families are (hopefully) more functional than the Tenenbaums.

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)
dir. Wes Anderson · 1h 50m · TMDB 7.5
Royal Tenenbaum and his wife Etheline had three children and then they separated. All three children are extraordinary --- all geniuses. Virtually all memory of the brilliance of the young Tenenbaums was subsequently erased by two decades of betrayal, failure, and disaster. Most of this was generally considered to be their father's fault. "The Royal Tenenbaums" is the story of the family's sudden, unexpected reunion one recent winter.
