ANDRZEJ WAJDA 100In commemoration of the centennial of Polish director Andrzej Wajda (1926-2016), Central and Eastern Europe’s most provocatively political post-war filmmaker, the DFT will present four of his most celebrated masterworks in new restorations. Screenings of Andrzej Wajda’s films in the USA in 2026 are part of the Wajda 100 Tour – North America Project, organized by DI Factory with the financial support of the Polish Film Institute.“Andrzej Wajda was one of the greatest filmmakers we’ve ever had. He left behind one of the most formidable bodies of work in the history of the art form. He was a true master.” –Martin ScorseseDANTONGérard Depardieu and Wojciech Pszoniak star in Andrzej Wajda’s powerful, intimate depiction of the ideological clash between the earthy, man-of-the-people Georges Danton and icy Jacobin extremist Maximilien Robespierre, both key figures of the French Revolution. By drawing parallels to Polish “solidarity,” a movement that was being quashed by the government as the film went into production, Wajda ingeniously and energetically transported history into the present. Meticulous and fiery, with a pulsing, speed-of-light narrative, Danton has been hailed as one of the greatest films ever made about The Terror. 1983 César Award for Best Director, Andrzej Wajda. In French with English subtitles. “Absolutely superb. Wajda has made a great historical picture, one with sweat and grime all over it.” -Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Danton (1983)

dir. Andrzej Wajda · 2h 16m · TMDB 6.9

Danton and Robespierre were close friends and fought together in the French Revolution, but by 1793 Robespierre was France's ruler, determined to wipe out opposition with a series of mass executions that became known as the Reign of Terror. Danton, well known as a spokesman of the people, had been living in relative solitude in the French countryside, but he returned to Paris to challenge Robespierre's violent rule and call for the people to demand their rights. Robespierre, however, could not accept such a challenge, even from a friend and colleague, and he blocked out a plan for the capture and execution of Danton and his allies.
