The Nacirema Society

THE NACIREMA SOCIETY requests the honor of your presence at a celebration of their first one hundred years, is a pitch perfect comedy by celebrated Detroit native and nationally renowned playwright, poet and author Pearl Cleage. The Chicago Tribune called the play “a nuanced exploration of class, privilege, generational wealth and family betrayal”. Set in 1964 in Montgomery, Alabama, as the Nacirema Society is preparing for its 100th anniversary debutante ball, audiences are invited to step into Cleage’s keenly observed world of African American Society. With young love brewing, old family skeletons rattling, intense social expectation and national media attention abounding ...what could possibly go awry?
